To the editor:

Recent articles in local papers have called for a look at the real numbers and what it will cost the town of Arundel to withdraw from Regional School Unit 21. It has been said multiple times from different sources that Arundel would not be able to fix its school, Mildred L. Day, because they simply couldn’t afford to on its own. Let’s look at the actual numbers related to the proposed renovation plan and the RSU 21 projected costs. These numbers come from RSU 21 directly. The plan calls for $3.7 million to be spent on M.L. Day School out of a total plan that will cost the district $52 million.

Arundel’s share of that total is $6.6 million dollars. Over 20 years with interest, Arundel’s share will be $10,982,537.16, just under $11 million. If Arundel withdraws from RSU 21, using the current plan, spending $3.7 million dollars on M.L. Day School, Arundel’s cost over 20 years with interest would be $5,356,689.96, less than $5.5 million dollars.
