Search for answers still on at MSK

KENNEBUNK — More than 60 parents and teachers packed another RSU 21 Facilities Committee meeting, passionately pleading for the health and safety of students and faculty at the Middle School of the Kennebunks.

Some, again, called for the closure of the facility, while problems at the building are investigated and until a permanent solution is found.

The Monday, March 19 meeting was the result of ongoing public concern, surrounding approximately 30 staff members who are speaking out about their illnesses, which they believe stem from the MSK facility.

"I listened to these people speak last Wednesday and they are crying and angry, and what about the depression they suffer from. My daughter comes home and says she loves her teacher," said parent Heather McLaughlin who said that staff concerns, as well as parent realizations of potential impact to their children, are adding up. "I am just very concerned about their well-being overall. I just feel like all the things that are being done to this building should not be done with human beings in it."

McLaughlin's statement received applause from the crowd, but despite the call, members of the committee and administrators said there have been no recommendations made to close the building.

"I want to get the cause and effect of where we are today. These may have been issues caused two years ago, or 10 years ago when this building was built," said Tim Hussey, chairman of the Facilities Committee. "I cannot advocate closing a building in this community."
