New law to allow earlier RSU opt-out for towns

A new law will allow communities that wish to opt out of a regional school unit to begin the process six months earlier.

Beginning Jan. 1, 2012, residents of a municipality that has been a member of an RSU for at least 30 months may petition to withdraw from the unit. The current minimum time is 36 months.

  1. A huge mistake on the part of legislators to allow this to pass, and a huge mistake to undergo withdrawal from an RSU, especially in this economic climate. (2)

  2. What are the repercussions? Will the state lower aid to those towns that don't consolidate? (3)

  3. (3) No, it's the law, they will not penalize either.

  4. With the declining subsidies from the state, how can Arundel afford an elementary school?

  5. It is important to realize however, that we will not get the same state subsidies that we were before...it isn't there... the state just doesn't have it. That is why RSU21 has had a hard time with its budgets as well....I am not sure people truly understand that. Yes it is the law, but the state is broke...no law can get blood from a rock...I think we need to understand that the money simply isn't there in the same capacity it was 5 years ago.

  6. I'd like to know how Arundel will be able to maintain a K-5 education system, keeping the salaries of the teachers intact, keeping the programming at the same level, providing transportation and special ed services, AND paying the $1.2M/year to send students to TAMS.

Where will the money come from, and does anyone expect that their taxes will not increase as a result of the costs associated with withdrawal and school/contract maintenance?

  7. We need more of an explanation than simply "we need out!"

  8. I am baffled by the comments here. 'We need out!' 'The RSU 21 Board needs to make amends!' 'Vote no! Reduce taxes!'

None of these comments make sense, and even less so without any reason why to back them up.

WHY do 'we need out'? Because you don't like the RSU and what it's done for MLD? Because all children who have attended MLD since the consolidation have seen a drastic improvement in their performance?

Or is it because you prefer our tax money be sent to a school in which we have no say how the money is spent, and no representation?

If the only reason 'we need out' is because you are angry that you have to work and get along with a couple other towns in your district, that isn't enough. It isn't enough to be angry, it isn't enough to throw away the work that's been done, and it isn't enough to now try to increase our tax dollars just to satisfy what appears to be a grudge.

If you have no answers, I challenge anyone who does to share them. Otherwise, this simply looks like a forum for people with no direction. (2)
