Arundel's future look debated

ARUNDEL — The future of Arundel's town image sparked a lively debate at the Planning Board workshop meeting held on Sept. 6.

The meeting was held to discuss Arundel's proposed business district on Route 1 but it was quickly evident that the members of the Planning Board and members of the Economic Development Committee who were in attendance all had different views for the town's future.

  1. Where on God's green earth does anyone think that Arundel will have *any* type of village atmosphere? There is no 'downtown', it's all Route 1, with a bunch of businesses and some car dealerships sprinkled along the road.

There isn't a snowball's chance *anywhere* that the town of Arundel can create an 'image' that will be appealing to anyone outside the town.

What's the main attraction in town, anyway? Bentley's? Great for them, and I applaud Bentley for being a successful businessman, but that's not the focal point of Arundel for all.

What does Arundel offer to *anyone*?

Soon, a disjointed, self-insulated school 'district' with contractual obligations that remove any choice for anyone moving into town with kids.

High property taxes, to rise higher if the withdrawal is successful.

No quaint downtown where people would want to shop or congregate. No public parks that would attract visitors.

    Nothing.

You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig.

  2. That was a little harsh. No one is putting lipstick on a pig. There are people giving an honest effort to try to make changes to the town that will attract business in order to lower the residential tax burden and at the same time draw visitors. It's not an easy task and much needs to be done. I don't think putting a negative spin on what they are trying to do will help anyone. Why do we have to put down the good efforts of others?

Do not count out the consildated school district. Many people in this town believe that withdrawal would be a mistake.

  3. Kudo's to the Planning Board and Economic Development Committee. Looks like the plans that they are making jointly are going to shape the look of Arundel's future.
