Be Safe and Enjoy the New Year!

Missing Barnstable man believed dead

Family and friends of a 23-year-old Barnstable man who disappeared 10 days ago in Maine appear convinced that he is dead.

In an obituary in today's Times, Prescott Wright's family describes him as "a lover of people" and a "builder of boats" who lived for the water.
Wright and Zachary Wells, 21, of Burlington, Vt., disappeared early in the morning on Dec. 20 from a gathering at Wells' home in the coastal Kennebunkport village of Cape Porpoise.

Both men attended The Landing School in nearby Arundel, Maine.

After they didn't show up for classes, the search for the men focused on waters around Goat Island, little more than a mile from Wells' home.

On Christmas Eve, Maine Marine Patrol found two life jackets, two pairs of jeans, a jacket, a sweatshirt and footwear on the island.

After the discovery, police, marine patrol and the state's dive team searched the water around the island using a plane and side-scan sonar, according to police.

Too many superintendents? More may be on the way as wave of withdrawal efforts hit Maine school districts in 2012

Posted Dec. 25, 2012, at 5:18 p.m.
Last modified Dec. 25, 2012, at 5:47 p.m.
Gov. Paul LePage again recently railed against Maine for having too many school superintendents. This time, he told the audience at a Chamber of Commerce event in Bangor earlier this month that Maine was the worst in the country when it came to administrators based on population: 127 administrators overseeing 186,000 students.
The state tried to tackle the too-many-superintendents problem in 2009, with a law requiring small school administrative units to consolidate into larger ones. The idea was that fewer, larger districts would mean fewer superintendents and other central office positions. Money would be saved by pooling resources, and successful education programs in one school could be shared with its new district-mates.
Not everyone complied, but in the end, 41 new districts were created and 39 former districts already were big enough to be compliant under the new law. By 2011, only 56 units were not compliant.
But the consolidation effort seems to be fraying. This year — the first when towns are allowed to leave those new districts — nearly one-third of the districts created under the consolidation law have faced withdrawal efforts as member communities seek to leave their Regional School Units and go it alone.
Of the new districts created by consolidation law, 14 faced withdrawal bids from one or more towns in 2012. Additionally, nine RSUs that were simply rebranded by the law, which were functionally the same as their preconsolidation districts, also faced withdrawal bids.

State police: Threat to Maine schools 'baseless'

State police said rumors of a threat on Facebook are "baseless."

By Leslie Bridgers lbridgers@pressherald.com
Staff Writer

State police are saying there was no Facebook threat directed toward Maine schools, as has been rumored since Wednesday.

"We've chased baseless rumors throughout the past 24 hours and found no credible threat directed at any Maine school," Col. Robert Williams, chief of Maine State Police, said in a statement Thursday afternoon.

Police and school officials in southern Maine have been responding to reports of a threat to schools that circulated on Facebook.

School officials in several districts have stepped up security for Friday, the day reportedly mentioned in the threat.

Gorham police will hold a press conference at 3 p.m.

Andrew Dolloff, superintendent of Regional School Unit 21 in Kennebunk, said Thursday morning that Gorham officials had told him they had not seen the message, and that the information was coming from Facebook posts talking about the threat.

RSU 21, Wells-Ogunquit schools review safety after Newtown massacre

KENNEBUNK — School administrators spent the days following the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School creating a plan to best meet the needs of their school communities, and making plans to revisit safety procedures.

RSU 21 Superintendent Andrew Dolloff kept in touch with the RSU 21 community through the AlertNow system after a gunman forcefully entered the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., killing 20 students and six adults last Friday, Dec. 14. Dolloff shared the sadness, anger and confusion many are feeling after the horrific events, but at the same time moved towards proactive and cautionary measures within the district.

“We realize that this wasn’t in our community that this happened, but it could have been and that’s what really brings it home is that little children were murdered and families were torn apart and it was in a community not far from here and not unlike our community,” Dolloff said Monday.

Safety measures are in place for RSU 21 facilities to minimize the likelihood of a similar threat, Dolloff said, including a single point of entry, visual control from each school’s office, and a comprehensive crisis plan that involves drills for evacuations, lock-downs and other scenarios.

Maine Voices: Small businesses – our nation's job creators – shouldn't be handcuffed

The writer says Sen. Collins' plan to impose an additional tax on the wealthy helps to protect small businesses.

By PATRICK SHRADER

A recent opinion piece, "Creating a small business tax loophole would only serve millionaires," wrongly suggests that a proposal by Sen. Susan Collins to impose an additional tax on millionaires and billionaires is a giveaway to the rich.

As a small business, Arundel Machine has focused its last 10 years on business growth.
This means putting more Mainers to work.

The Defense Authorization Act also includes funding for many other defense-related projects that will benefit Maine, our economy, and our national security. The bill authorizes $412 million for depot maintenance at National Guard repair sites, including the Maine Military Authority in Limestone; $6.9 billion for procurement of 29 Joint Strike Fighter aircraft — components for the F-35 are built at Pratt & Whitney in North Berwick and at General Dynamics’ facility at Saco Defense; and $606 million in funding for research and development for the CH-53K marine helicopter. Hunting Dearborn in Fryeburg manufactures the rotor shaft for this helicopter. In addition to funding for procurement of the Common Remotely Operated Weapons System, or CROWS, portions of which are building in Biddeford, South Paris and Arundel, the bill also authorizes $232 million for research and development of aerospace propulsion systems. The University of Maine conducts research on new propulsion and power technologies.

Need some woollens? Try alpaca

December 13, 2012 2:00 AM

ARUNDEL — Before hitting the department stores in search of cozy knits and snow gear, you might consider buying your socks, hats and mittens from an alpaca farm in Arundel.

The alpacas that live on the 10-acre property each have a name and their own personalities and owner Pam Drew treats them like domesticated pets.

By day, Drew is the treasurer at Kennebunk Savings Bank in Kennebunk, but in 2001, just one year after moving into her home on Limerick Road, she became the happy "mom" to three alpacas.

"You don't find that combination everywhere but it has worked for me," Drew said of balancing her day job and farm obligations. "I grew up in Arundel and I'm trying to make a Maine product."

First alleged 'johns' to have day in court Wednesday

Defense lawyers say they may also call suspected johns to the stand in the Kennebunk case.

BIDDEFORD - The first wave of men who were publicly named weeks ago as alleged "johns" of former Zumba instructor Alexis Wright in Kennebunk's still-growing prostitution scandal are due to appear in court to face charges Wednesday after weeks of waiting.

Kennebunk police released their 21 names in mid-October after issuing criminal complaints against them, each on a charge of engaging a prostitute. Police have since released dozens more names as part of their biweekly arrest blotter.

Reputations have been tarnished since police began releasing names, and many may want the scandal to go away as the day of their first court appearance passes.

But that's not likely, according to defense attorneys for Wright and her alleged co-conspirator, Mark Strong Jr.

Study: Maine's most attractive school districts

Posted: December 2
Updated: Today at 1:11 AM

http://www.onlinesentinel.com/news/schools-appeal-to-young-families-rated_2012-12-02.html

Using U.S. Census data, economists determine which Maine school districts parents with young children most often move to — and which ones they most often leave.

With their oldest son about to enter kindergarten, Suzanne and Jeff Farrington decided that it was time to move.

While most families with children choose a place to live based in part on available schools, it was the only factor for the Farringtons, who lived in Newfields, N.H., a small town on the southern border of the state near Exeter.

She's a stay-at-home mother and he travels around New England for his job in technology sales, so they weren't tied to an area by work. Suzanne Farrington said the Exeter-area school district is excellent, but it has 5,700 students and eventually would split up her sons – Jack, 5, Colin, 3, and Grant, 1 – into schools in three different towns.

KENNEBUNK — Organizers are planning to secure $4 million in private donations to support the Southern Maine Center for the Visual and Performing Arts, which is in the planning stages along with renovations at Kennebunk High School.

The community arts center is being discussed alongside renovations being planned for KHS, Kennebunkport Consolidated School and Mildred L. Day School in Arundel. The cost of the plans to renovate the three facilities is estimated between $61.7 million and $66.8 million, with two plans currently being reviewed at the high school — one with the free-standing performing arts center and the second without.

The cost of renovating the three school buildings, along with constructing the freestanding performing arts center, is estimated at $66.8 million, with $10 million of that total anticipated to be raised through private funding.

4 men plead guilty in Kennebunk prostitution case

While 54 men have appeared in three groups of names released by the department over the last six weeks, Deputy District Attorney Justina McGettigan confirmed Tuesday that four additional men pleaded guilty before their names would have been made public on the bi-weekly police blotter press release.

"They would not appear on a police blotter if they had already pled guilty," McGettigan said in an e-mail.

"That is what happened in these cases. They pled guilty and were sentenced prior to the release of the blotter."

Instead, the men went to court and accepted a plea in the case, paying fines.

Those men who pleaded guilty in Alfred District Court to the misdemeanor charge of engaging a prostitute are:

Benjamin Bouma, 40, of 26468 North 84th St., Peoria, Ariz.; Ryan P. Saucier, 31, of 45 Forest Ave., South Portland; Bradford Siegel, 56, of 14 Millridge Road, Cumberland; and Michael Sherwood, 53, of 1011 Washington St., Portland.

Arundel votes to stay with RSU 21

ARUNDEL – After three years of discussions and a margin of 125 votes, Arundel residents voted Nov. 6 to remain in Regional School Unit 21. The vote was 1,169 in favor of staying in the school district and 1,044 against the proposal.

To some, the vote came as a disappointment.

Jon Renell was one of those people.

Renell, who was on the Town of Arundel Withdrawal Committee and helped collect signatures for the petition, said it would be at least two years until residents can petition to leave RSU 21 again.

Although Renell has no intention of being a part of that, he said if asked, he would add his signature.

Others, such as Superintendent Andrew Dolloff, were pleased with the results. In a press release the day after the election, Dolloff said he was happy with the voters’ decision to stay in RSU 21 and added the true beneficiaries of the vote are the students.

Addressing the contentious nature of the issue, Velma Jones Hayes, chairman of the Arundel Board of Selectmen, said Arundel, Kennebunk and Kennebunkport worked together before the vote and will continue working together.

But despite moving ahead with plans, the district has a new issue looming on the horizon, Director Tim Hussey told the board.

"I was told a petition was submitted with enough signatures for Kennebunkport to start the withdrawal process," Hussey said.

Hussey said that his information was "second-hand or third-hand," but Superintendent Andrew Dolloff confirmed that Kennebunkport collected signatures on Election Day and will begin investigating the withdrawal process.

"I think withdrawal would be a detriment to the students of Kennebunkport," he said.

RSU 21 Board Receives Update on Capital Building Projects

On Monday, Nov. 19, the RSU 21 Board of School Directors heard from representatives of three building committees along with consultants from Harriman Architects and Engineers and Superintendent Andrew Dolloff regarding plans for major renovations to Kennebunk High School, Kennebunkport Consolidated School, and Mildred L. Day School in Arundel. The total cost of the three plans is estimated to be somewhere between $61.7M and $66.8M, depending upon the options selected by the Board.

Norm Archer, chair of the Consolidated School Building Committee and member of the RSU Board, shared plans for a $9.8M expansion and renovation of Kennebunkport’s only school facility. The plans call for a complete overhaul of the antiquated electrical, mechanical, and life safety systems, as well as the demolition of the existing gym to allow for the creation of a separate gymnasium, cafeteria, library, and kitchen facility. Currently, they gym doubles as a cafeteria during the day, and the library is located in a former classroom. The plan also calls for the elimination of portable classrooms by adding rooms for art and music instruction, and a complete reworking of traffic patterns and parking areas, increasing safety for students and accessibility to the building. Archer encouraged the Board to support the project, saying, “KCS is a true neighborhood school-- an integral part of life in Kennebunkport, used year round by both the district and town residents. However, after years without capital improvement, the time has come to address significant life safety issues and prepare the facility for the next 25-30 years. In that spirit, this committee has incorporated input from parents, teachers and an active town leadership to develop a thoroughly considered renovation plan.”

The plan for Mildred L. Day School, which serves Arundel’s kindergarten through grade 5 students, calls for approximately $4M in renovations, including updating of electrical, mechanical, and life safety systems and the addition of several classroom spaces. Currently, classes such as art and music are held in a portable classroom. By adding instructional space to the plan, the need for portable space is eliminated. Kevin Crowley, Principal at M.L. Day expressed pleasure with the committee’s recommendation. “The staff and students at the school are excited to be discussing a plan which allows the entire K-5 population to be unified in the main wing of our building, eliminating the need for children to attend classes in the outside portable classroom.”
