Need some woollens? Try alpaca

December 13, 2012 2:00 AM

ARUNDEL — Before hitting the department stores in search of cozy knits and snow gear, you might consider buying your socks, hats and mittens from an alpaca farm in Arundel.

The alpacas that live on the 10-acre property each have a name and their own personalities and owner Pam Drew treats them like domesticated pets.

By day, Drew is the treasurer at Kennebunk Savings Bank in Kennebunk, but in 2001, just one year after moving into her home on Limerick Road, she became the happy "mom" to three alpacas.

"You don't find that combination everywhere but it has worked for me," Drew said of balancing her day job and farm obligations. "I grew up in Arundel and I'm trying to make a Maine product."
