A hot-button issue at the meeting centered on RSU 21 elementary schools and questions that have been asked before: Is it worth it to have an elementary school in every town? Is consolidation a fiscally prudent decision?

Once the school board sees fit, the board will issue a questionnaire to residents to assess the level of community interest in the possibility.

In what would likely be a $10 million project, several possible options were brought to the table. Those options included closing Mildred L. Day School and relocating those students to Consolidated School, or vice versa. A third option explored moving to a kindergarten through third-grade system in each town and concentrating the remaining students at Sea Road School.

  1. I am interested in the outcome of this. If its about money/taxes, it seems the majority will be interested relocating. If its about community/identity, I would guess the majority will want the separate renovations in order to keep a school in each town. The good news is that the educational standards remain high in both scenarios.

  2. Great points. Does having a school in each of the towns really give them identity? Confused about what gives a town an identity.
