KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine — Nearly two months
after two Landing School students disappeared, a local resident walking a
dog discovered human remains around 5 p.m. Sunday on Vaughn's Island,
just off the coast of Cape Porpoise.
The island can be reached from the mainland at low tide.
The remains, which are currently at the Maine
Medical Examiner's Office, were recovered by members of the town's
police and fire departments.
Police Chief Craig Sanford said it could take several days before an identification is made.
Zachary Wells, 21, and Prescott Wright, 23, were last seen at 5 Mills Road in Kennebunkport around midnight on Dec. 20.
Sanford said he has reached out to both of the students' families.
“I contacted them and let them know we just don't know,” he said. “We don't want to jump to conclusions.”
