For adults who grew up with school lunch menus full of
Tater tots, pizza, and macaroni and cheese, it seems foreign to see salad and
kiwi slices in the school lunch line. But those unhealthy, comfort-food lunches
to which many of us became accustomed as children played a part in what has
become a national obesity problem – and now schools are seeking a better
way.
Regional School Unit 21 recently received a bronze award in the Healthier US School Challenge for the efforts in its elementary schools, where fruits and vegetables are promoted and included as much as possible. The challenge program began in 2004 for all schools that take part in the National School Lunch Program, and it’s become a part of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! Initiative that began in 2010 to promote physical activity for youth.
