The 2012 Annual Report for RSU 21, with proposed budget data for the 2012-2013 school year, is now available.  We hope you will find this greatly expanded document to be helpful as you seek to understand more about our schools.

The financial data in this report will provide you with a significant amount of information as you consider your vote on the 2013 school budget (please remember the important dates of May 1 and May 15, where you are encouraged to cast your vote - see details on page 46 of the report).

Fire and rescue budget discussion gets heated in Arundel

ARUNDEL — Discussion over the Arundel Fire and Rescue Department got heated at the Board of Selectmen meeting held on Monday, April 9.

The board, led by Vice Chairman Mark Paulin in Chairwoman Velma Jones Hayes's absence, began to review budget proposals and opened with the controversial issue of potentially cutting fire and rescue.

The preliminary proposed municipal budget stands at $1.4 million, an increase of $200,000 from last year's $1.2 million budget. According to Town Manager Todd Shea, the total budget under discussion, including taxes and the RSU 21 costs, is $5.7 million, $200,000 more than last year.

Kennebunk clergyman Rev. Nathaniel H. Fletcher wrote a letter to the Humane Society of Massachusetts recommending that Capt. James Perkins Sr. and Capt. James Perkins Jr., of Arundel, be decorated for heroic efforts in rescuing and reviving six people from drowning in the Kennebunk River. His letter described the harrowing events of November 29, 1800 and was later published in its entirety in the Salem Gazette.

Arundel Town Manager Todd Shea said it best Wednesday, summing up what had been months of heated debate culminating in Tuesday's 517 to 291 vote in favor of exploring withdrawal from RSU 21.

"The town of Arundel has spoken," Shea said. "Now we'll do all the due diligence to try to figure out what's in the best interest of the town."

"Destination Imagination" Duckies need our support

ARUNDEL — For several months now a group of students at Mildred L. Day School have been working on a journey. This journey is called "Destination Imagination." First-grade teacher Cathy Bansmer has been the teacher/mentor for DI at the school for 12 years. This year she has been instrumental in navigating two teams through instant challenges and guiding the team managers through the DI process.

One of the teams, appropriately called the DI Duckies, consists of seven girls in third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade. This team has made its way through the regional challenge, placing third, and the state challenge, placing second. One of the biggest challenges is now before this team. "Global Finals" are in Knoxville, Tenn., where more than 1,000 teams from around the world will attend this exciting event.

The Board of Selectmen is in need of volunteers interested in being on the RSU 21 Withdrawal Committee.  The Makeup of this committee requires the Board to appoint one member of the group filing the petition and one member of the general public.

Voters decide 517-291 to pursue divorce from RSU 21

ARUNDEL — With Tuesday’s votes tallied, the Town of Arundel has come to a decision regarding its relationship with Regional School Unit 21: Voters have resolved, by a 517-291 margin, to move forward with the withdrawal process.

A “yes” vote also authorizes a withdrawal committee to expend up to $35,000 for a panel of experts to study and release more official numbers pertaining to the cost of RSU involvement. It does not finalize a separation from the school district; rather, a series of subsequent hearings and votes will take place.

Arundel votes 'yes' on investigating withdrawal process from RSU 21

ARUNDEL — After the votes were tallied, Arundel residents let their voices be heard nearly two to one that they were in favor of investigating the withdrawal process from the RSU 21.

The vote, which was held on Tuesday, April 10 at the Arundel Fire Department, came down to 517 votes in favor of investigating the process of withdrawal and 291 votes in opposition. 

“The town of Arundel has spoken,” said Town Manager Todd Shea. “Now we’ll do all the due diligence to try to figure out what’s in the best interest of the town.”

Shea said the next step will be the Board of Selectmen appointing a withdrawal committee; a second vote for withdrawal will only be set by the Commission of Education once an approved withdrawal agreement has been created.
