KES repairs to top $250K
KENNEBUNK — New roof drains will be installed at Kennebunk
Elementary School before the start of the school year, after three failing
drains have led to flooding concerns.
The drains failed during a storm June 23, flooding 29
classrooms, bathrooms and hallways. While the three failing neoprene drains have
been replaced with new cast iron drains, RSU 21 Facilities Supervisor Alyce Swan
received support from the RSU 21 Board of Directors for replacing the remaining
24 roof drains.
"We're really in a good place right now," Swan said of the
work that's been completed, which included removing all wet materials like
carpet, wall tiles, and classroom items. "Everything that was wet, it went. We
sort of worried about the rest of it later. There were a lot of people here
working as quickly as we could to get the water out of the building, but having
said that, there was a lot of water."
She said the roof drains have "been a problem," causing
issues three other times in the building, which opened in 2004, though not as
severe. Swan said changing all 27 drains to a cast iron system will take care of
concerns.
"It's really nerve-wracking every time it rains," Swan
said.
The drains used at KES are not in any other school in the
RSU, Swan said. Swan said she reviewed files from when KES was constructed and
found that the builder wanted to change plans from the neoprene drains to cast
iron, but that never took place.

Hannah Wiley of Arundel/Thornton Academy were among the 340 athletes
representing 107 colleges and universities to be named to the U.S. Track
& Field and Cross Country Coaches Association women's 2012 Division
III All-Academic Track & Field Team.

Students play lead role in video production
Statewide effort focuses on teen sexual awareness
The halls of Scarborough High School turned into a film sound stage
last week when Project Aware, a Saco-based youth empowerment
organization, was in Scarborough to film the final scenes of a 30-minute
video on teen sexual awareness on Friday, July 27.
The film, still untitled, features students from all over Maine who served as the film’s cast and crew.
“Our goal is always to empower young people to lead,” said Carl
Lakari, the executive director and co-founder of Project Aware. “We
support them in creating a quality product that deals with a very
important issue.”
Since its inception in 2003, Project Aware has created films dealing
with such subjects as bullying, alcohol and prescription drug abuse,
teen anxiety and depression, role models, tobacco use and relationships
between parents and children.

School district rushes to action after water leaks
KENNEBUNK — The RSU 21 School District is taking immediate
and proactive measures after roof drains at Kennebunk Elementary School failed
earlier this summer, causing water intrusion in the school's classroom wings,
Superintendent Andrew Dolloff said.
"Because of our sensitivity to air-quality issues, we've
really been aggressive at getting our air quality folks in there, identifying
everything that had any moisture and we're getting rid of it," Dolloff said.
"We're being aggressive in making sure we are doing everything the right way and
are left with a healthy, safe environment."
That sensitivity comes from issues with water intrusion at
the Middle School of the Kennebunks. In the last school year school staff
members said they believed health issues they were experiencing stemmed from the
effects of water and mold in the building.
RSU 21 offices move to KES

KENNEBUNK — The RSU 21 Central Administration offices have moved to a space at Kennebunk Elementary School.
The
move, which happened this summer, frees up former administrative space
at Kennebunk High School to be utilized as classrooms, while creating a
centralized center of operations for administrative departments, said
Superintendent Andrew Dolloff.
The administrative offices, which include
financial services, are now located at the end of a hallway at KES and
will have their own entrance and parking. They are next to the
district's Special Services and Technology Departments.
